10 Things I Did To Build My Portfolio at University

The magic 10 things:

  1. Blocked out time to shoot - for me I booked whole day sessions every Wednesday, this held me accountable and I enjoyed the routine

  2. Always showed up for myself - I would never cancel the studio sessions or time I planned to study so I could show myself I can be trusted

  3. Went to as many talks and events as I could - my university had a business help team (The Enterprise Team) and they ran business related workshops where I learnt so much

  4. Said yes to any work that came my way - before I had a clear vision I tried many types of photography, some that felt so far fro my niche actually ended up in my making connections for big jobs that aligned with me

  5. I wrote myself a list of technical skills I wanted to achieve over my final year (im not very conceptual and this gave me weekly shoot ideas whilst I found a style)

  6. Attended all university workshops with professionals, no matter what genre they worked in

  7. Always took feedback from peers/tutors, you may not agree but it is important to see how others view your work, as someone will during a portfolio review

  8. I took - reluctant - breaks. Over the Christmas break from uni I did no work, I knew I could switch back on in January, and lo and behold I did. Everyone needs to recharge with those who mean the most to them

  9. I only shot/bought products i actually use, ro reduce waste and save myself money

  10. Made sure I stayed hydrated via electrolytes or yorkshire tea
